VETQINOM 2,5% (injectable suspension)

A homogeneous, finely dispersed suspension, from milky white to light brown in colour.

1 ml of the product contains the active substance:

- cefquinome sulfate – 29,64 mg (equivalent to 25 mg cefquinome).

Excipients: polysorbate 80, chlorobutanol hemihydrate, medium-chain triglycerides (Miglyol 812N).

Cefquinome is an antibiotic belonging to the group of fourth-generation cephalosporins. It acts bactericidally against Gram-positive (Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Bacillus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. (serogroups A, B and C)/Clostridium spp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, Citrobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Serratia marcescens, Histophilus somni, Bacteroides spp., Fusobacterium spp., Prevotella spp., Actinobacillus spp.).

The mechanism of action of the antibiotic consists in inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. As a fourth-generation cephalosporin, cefquinome combines a high degree of penetration into bacterial cells with a high level of resistance to β-lactamases. Unlike cephalosporins of previous generations, cefquinome is not hydrolyzed by chromosome-encoded cephalosporinases of the AmpC-type or plasmid-mediated cephalosporinases of a certain of Enterobacteriaceae.

After intramuscular administration, cefquinome rapidly enters the systemic circulation, reaching the maximum serum concentration in dogs and cats within 15-45 minutes and remaining at the therapeutic level for 24 hours. It binds poorly to serum proteins (less than 5%), therefore it penetrates into the cerebrospinal and synovial fluids and is rapidly eliminated from the body, mainly unchanged in the urine; the elimination half-life of cefquinome in dogs and cats is 1-2 hours.

For the treatment of dogs and cats with mastitis, meningitis, arthritis, cystitis and urethritis, as well as skin and respiratory tract infections caused by cefquinome‑sensitive microorganisms.

Administer by deep intramuscular injection once daily at the following dose:

- dogs and cats – 0,5 ml of the product per 5 kg of body weight (2,5 mg of cefquinome per 1 kg of body weight) of the animal daily for 2-5 days.

Shake the vial well before use.

It is recommended to administer each injection dose at different sites.

Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or other β-lactam antibiotics.

Do not use in animals with a body weight of less than 1,25 kg.

Do not use simultaneously with bacteriostatic agents due to a possible decrease in the bactericidal activity of cefquinome.

Do not use if cefquinome-resistant pathogen strains are detected.

Do not use in animals with severe hepatic or renal impairment.

A temporary swelling at the injection site is possible; it disappears within 15 days after the last administration of the product.

To prevent a local reaction, it is advisable to change the injection site each time.

Increasing the dose or frequency of administration, or deviation from the recommended treatment regimen, may lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance.

The product is recommended for use only on the basis of a test for sensitivity of microorganisms to cefquinome. Cefquinome selects resistant strains, such as bacteria producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL), and may pose a risk to human health if these strains spread to humans, for example through food. Therefore, the product should be used for the treatment of clinical conditions in animals that are difficult to treat, or for the therapy of severe acute forms of disease in which treatment must be started immediately, taking into account the experience gained; treatment should be initiated taking into account empirical data without prior determination of the sensitivity of microorganisms to antimicrobial agents.

It is known that bacteria have cross- resistance to other cephalosporins. Due to undesirable pharmacodynamic interaction, cefquinome must not be administered simultaneously with bacteriostatic agents.

There is no information on adverse effects in female dogs and female cats during pregnancy and lactation. Use of the product is permitted only after a careful benefit/risk assessment by a veterinarian.

After first opening from the vial, the product must be used within 28 days, provided that the product is withdrawn aseptically and stored in a dry, dark place at a temperature from 2 to 8 °C.
