MARFLOX is a combination product containing moxifloxacin and colistin.
Moxifloxacin is a 4th generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity, active against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Enterobacter spp., Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Haemophilus spp., Moraxella spp., Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Serratia marcescens, Providencia spp., Citrobacter freundii, Neisseria spp., Morganella morganii, Campylobacter spp., Fusobacterium spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Legionella spp., Bacteroides spp.) and Gram-positive (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium spp.) microorganisms, as well as chlamydia (Chlamydia spp.) and mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma spp.). It is active against microorganisms resistant to other classes of antibacterial products, including β-lactam and macrolide antibiotics.
The mechanism of action of moxifloxacin consists in the inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II), which stops the process of DNA supercoiling and synthesis.
Colistin is a polymyxin group antibiotic. It has a bactericidal effect on Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas spp.) by binding to the phospholipids of the cytoplasmic membrane, increasing its permeability for both intracellular and extracellular components, which leads to the destruction of the bacterial cell wall.
Moxifloxacin is rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Feed has little effect on the rate and extent of absorption. The bioavailability of moxifloxacin after oral administration is about 90%. It has a pronounced post-antibiotic effect. The half-life of moxifloxacin is 9-16 hours.
From the digestive tract, colistin is absorbed in a small amount, therefore it acts effectively in diseases of the digestive tract organs. Unlike the low concentrations of colistin in blood serum and tissues, high and constant concentrations of it are always present in various parts of the digestive tract. Its higher concentration is observed in the colon and cecum. It is excreted from the body mainly in feces.
Indications
Treatment of ornamental birds (pigeons, parrots, canaries) for infectious diseases of the respiratory system and digestive tract caused by microorganisms susceptible to moxifloxacin and colistin.
Dosage and administration
Orally with drinking water at a dose of 1,0 ml of the product per 4 L of drinking water or 5 ml of moxifloxacin and 100,000 IU of colistin per 1 kg of body weight. The course of treatment is 3-5 days.
Shake the ampoule or vial with the product before use.
During the treatment period, the ornamental birds should receive only water containing the product. A fresh solution of the product is prepared daily in a volume calculated for consumption during the day.
Contraindications
Do not use if resistant strains of pathogens are detected.
Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin and colistin.
Do not use if resistant strains of pathogens are detected.
Do not use simultaneously with tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, chloramphenicol, as well as with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Do not use simultaneously with products containing Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+cations.
Do not use in food-producing animals and poultry!
Do not use for prophylaxis!
Precautions
Adverse reactions
In case of overdose in birds, disorders of the nervous system activity may be observed. If adverse reactions (pruritus, muscle tremor) occur, the use of the product is discontinued and desensitizing therapy is applied.
Special precautions for use
Due to the possible development of resistance of microorganisms to moxifloxacin and colistin, the product should not be used for moderate infections. Treatment should be based on susceptibility testing of the pathogenic microorganisms to moxifloxacin and colistin.
The use of the product must be discontinued if the resistance of the pathogen to moxifloxacin and colistin is detected.
Use during egg-laying
Not established.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Do not use simultaneously with tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, chloramphenicol, as well as with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Do not use simultaneously with products containing Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+ cations.
It is not recommended to mix the product with other veterinary medicinal products.
