Pharmacological properties

The effect of the feed mixture is due to the presence of canthaxanthin, which belongs to the group of carotenoids known for its bright red-orange colour. The carotenoids in the mixture cause pigmentation of plant and animal tissues. When added to feed and consumed by animals, these pigments are absorbed in the body and enhance the colour intensity of broiler skin, egg yolk and salmon meat, which increases the consumer value of the products.

Cantaxanthin is a keto-carotenoid pigment produced by biological fermentation.

In the poultry industry, canthaxanthin is added to feed as a colourant to enhance the yellow or red colour of egg yolks and chicken skin, giving an intense golden yellow pigmentation. Similarly, in fish farming, canthaxanthin is used to enhance the natural colour of fish such as salmon and trout, giving them a brighter and more attractive appearance. Crustaceans, such as shrimp and crayfish, also benefit from the addition of canthaxanthin to achieve the desired pigmentation.

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, canthaxanthin may also have potential health benefits for animals. It is considered to be a source of provitamin A, which is converted to vitamin A by the animal body. Vitamin A plays a crucial role in maintaining good vision, supporting immune function and promoting overall animal health.

Application

It is used for pigmentation of egg yolks, broiler skin and meat of salmonids.
