Oxytocinvet

Oxytocinvet
Ingredients: Oxytocin
Application: injecting
Type of formulation: Hormonal

DESCRIPTION

Colorless transparent liquid.

COMPOSITION

1 ml contains active ingredient:
Oxytocin – 10 IU.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Active ingredient of the preparation is oxytocin – a hormone of posterior pituitary. Threshold of oxytocin-induced uterine contractions decreases during pregnancy, high level of estrogen, or if the parturition has already begun. In veterinary medicine oxytocin is used to stimulate contractions during parturition and in the postpartum period for retention of placenta, for the treatment of metritis, uterine involution after manual correction and treatment of agalactia. Oxytocin decomposes in the gastrointestinal tract, so it should be administered parenterally. After intramuscular administration of the preparation the effect is observed after 3-5 minutes.
The effect of the preparation on dogs, after intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous administration is after 13 and 20 minutes. The degree of absorption of oxytocin during intranasal use is different. It is considered that the preparation penetrates into the placenta and enters the circulatory system of the fetus in a small amount.

INDICATIONS

Indications for use, noting the type of animals and features of therapy (for prevention
or treatment):
Cattle, horses, sheep and goats, pigs, dogs and cats:
- to stimulate or enhance uterine contractions during parturition, to treat postpartum retention of placenta, metritis, to accelerate involution of the uterus after parturition, and also to stimulate milk ejection in cases of agalactia..
- uterine bleeding, pyometra.
- to release the breast from milk or inflammatory exudate for the treatment of mastitis.

DOSAGE

The medicine is administrated once intramuscularly or subcutaneously in the following doses:
Cattle : 4 – 5 ml (40 – 50 IU) per head.
Horses : 4 – 5 ml (40 – 50 IU) per head.
Sheep, goats, pigs : 1 – 3 ml (10 – 30 IU) per head.
Dogs :0.3 – 1 ml (3 – 10 IU) per head.
Cats : 0.3 – 0.5 ml (3 – 5 IU) per head.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to oxytocin.
Oxytocin is contraindicated for animals with discoordination of parturition activity that emerged on the background of the wrong location of the fetus.
While injecting of oxytocin before parturition wait for the relaxation of the cervix in the usual way, or pre-enter estrogen.

PRECAUTIONS

Proper calculation of the dose of oxytocin rarely causes serious side effects. Most side effects are the result of inappropriate individual or very high doses. Hypersensitivity reactions occur mainly when prescribed preparations are obtained not synthetically.
While intravenous injection the preparation should be injected slowly.
Do not use during parturition, if cervix is not disclosed, except for induction of mares parturition.
When giving birth attendants make sure that there are no physical barriers for parturition activity (large fetus, malposition, obstruction of birth canals), not to cause uterine rupture.
Oxytocin is incompatible with fibrinolysin, noradrenalin, meterazin, warfarin sodium.
Compatibility depends on pH level, concentration, temperature and the used solvent.
Postpartum hypertension may develop because of simultaneous administration of the symptomatic preparations with oxytocin. Oxytocin may cause females bradycardia and arrhythmia on the background of cyclopropane anesthesia.
