PROVERAVET (tablets)
| Ingredients: | Medroxyprogesterone acetate |
| Application: | ORAL |
| Type of formulation: | Hormonal |
Description
White to greyish tablets with a characteristic odour.
Composition
One tablet contains the active substance:
- medroxyprogesterone acetate — 5 mg.
Excipients: potato starch, lactose, talc, calcium stearate.
Pharmacological Properties
ATC vet QG03A — hormonal contraceptives for systemic use.
The active substance is medroxyprogesterone acetate — a synthetic progestin, an analogue of progestins produced by the corpus luteum. Its action consists in transforming the proliferative endometrium into a secretory one, enhancing myometrial hypertrophy and suppressing uterine contractions. Depending on the dose, medroxyprogesterone acetate suppresses the secretion of pituitary gonadotropins and exerts an anti-insulin effect. In animals, medroxyprogesterone acetate produces a pronounced adrenocortical effect and may suppress the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol.
Medroxyprogesterone also exerts an anti-oestrogenic effect and may reduce testosterone levels in the blood plasma of males.
Indications
PROVERAVET is recommended for female cats and female dogs for the prevention and suppression of oestrus; for male cats and male dogs for the reduction of sexual activity and correction of undesirable behaviour (territorial urine marking, intraspecific aggression, hyperexcitability). The veterinary medicinal product also prevents the clinical signs of pseudopregnancy and associated false lactation.
Dosage and Administration
PROVERAVET is administered orally, placed directly onto the base of the tongue, or mixed with a small amount of food 1–2 hours before the main feeding, at the following doses:
Female cats:
For prevention of oestrus — 1 tablet once weekly; administer throughout the period during which postponement of oestrus is desired. After discontinuation, oestrus resumes in approximately 2 weeks. The product must not be administered for longer than 18 months.
For suppression of oestrus — 1 tablet once daily for 3–5 days until signs of oestrus cease, commencing no later than the third day after the onset of oestrus, then 1 tablet once weekly. Oestrus must not be interrupted more than twice per year.
Male cats:
Upon the appearance of signs of sexual arousal, for sedation and correction of undesirable behaviour (territorial urine marking, intraspecific aggression, hyperexcitability) — 1 tablet once daily for 8 days, then 1 tablet once weekly.
Female dogs:
For prevention of oestrus — 1 tablet per 10 kg body weight once daily, commencing 7–15 days before the expected onset of oestrus; after discontinuation, oestrus resumes within a few days. The product must not be administered continuously for longer than 32 days.
For suppression of oestrus — 1 tablet per 10 kg body weight once daily for the first 3 days, then 2 tablets per 10 kg body weight once daily for 7 days until signs of oestrus cease, commencing no later than the third day after the onset of oestrus. After discontinuation, oestrus typically resumes after 4–9 months. No more than 2 courses per year are recommended.
Male dogs:
Upon the appearance of signs of sexual arousal, for sedation and correction of undesirable behaviour (territorial urine marking, intraspecific aggression, hyperexcitability) — 4 tablets per 10 kg body weight per day for 8 days, then 2 tablets per 10 kg body weight per day for 8 days.
Contraindications
The product must not be used in animals during pregnancy and lactation, or in cases of pseudopregnancy and lactation.
Do not use in animals with diseases of the urogenital and endocrine systems, irregular sexual cycles, mammary gland tumours, or in sexually immature animals (prior to first oestrus).
Use is not recommended if more than 2 days have elapsed since the onset of oestrus.
Precautions
Prolonged use may result in alterations of the oestrous cycle, mammary gland enlargement, increased appetite, and weight gain.
The veterinary medicinal product should be administered under veterinary supervision, particularly in sighthounds (greyhounds).
