Description

Clear colourless solution.

Composition

1 ml of the product contains the active substance:
- oxytocin - 10 IU.
Excipients: chlorobutanol hydrate, propylene glycol, water for injections.

Pharmacological Properties

The active substance of the product is oxytocin — a hormone of the posterior pituitary lobe. The threshold for oxytocin-induced uterine contractions decreases during pregnancy, at high oestrogen levels, or when parturition has already commenced. In veterinary medicine, oxytocin is used to stimulate uterine contractions during parturition and in the post-partum period in cases of retained placenta, for the treatment of metritis, uterine involution following manual correction, and for the treatment of agalactia. Oxytocin is degraded in the gastrointestinal tract; therefore, it must be administered parenterally. Following intramuscular administration, the effect is observed within 3–5 minutes.

In dogs, the duration of action following intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous administration is 13 and 20 minutes, respectively. The degree of oxytocin absorption via intranasal administration varies. The product is considered to cross the placenta in small amounts and enter the foetal circulation.

Indications

Cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, and cats:
- to stimulate or enhance uterine contractions during parturition, for the treatment of post-partum retained placenta, metritis, to accelerate uterine involution after parturition, and to stimulate milk let-down in cases of agalactia
- in cases of uterine haemorrhage
- to clear the mammary glands of milk or inflammatory exudate in the treatment of mastitis

Dosage and Administration

The product is administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously:

Cattle - 4–5 ml (40–50 IU) per animal.

Horses - 4–5 ml (40–50 IU) per animal.

Sheep, goats, pigs - 1–3 ml (10–30 IU) per animal.

Dogs – 0,3–1 ml (3–10 IU) per animal.

Cats – 0,3–0,5 ml (3–5 IU) per animal.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to oxytocin.
Oxytocin is contraindicated in animals with dystocia caused by malpresentation of the foetus. When administering oxytocin prior to parturition, cervical relaxation must be achieved by natural means, or oestrogen must be administered beforehand.

Precautions

Adverse reactions (frequency and severity) when used in the indicated species, if more than one.
When the dose is calculated correctly, oxytocin rarely causes significant adverse effects. Most adverse effects result from the administration of inappropriate individual doses or excessively high doses. Hypersensitivity reactions occur predominantly when non-synthetic preparations are used.
When administered intravenously, the product must be injected very slowly.

Presentation

Type I and Type II neutral glass vials (grades NS-1, NS-2, USP-1), sealed with rubber stoppers under aluminium crimp caps, in volumes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 ml. Secondary packaging: cardboard box.

Storage

Store in a dry, dark place out of reach of children at a temperature of 5°C to 25°C.

Shelf life 

12 months.
Shelf life after first broaching of the vial from the vial - 7 days, provided aseptic withdrawal conditions are maintained and the product is stored at 2°C to 8°C.
