MASTIVET plus (intramammary suspension)
| Ingredients: | Amoxicillin trihydrate, Prednisolone |
| Application: | Intramammary |
| Type of formulation: | Antimastitic |
Description
Oily suspension from white to yellowish in colour with a specific odour of the constituent components.
Composition
1 ml of the preparation contains the active substances:
- amoxicillin trihydrate - 50,0 mg;
- prednisolone - 1,0 mg.
Excipients: calcium stearate, paraffin, liquid paraffin (mineral oil).
Pharmacological Properties
ATC-vet classification code: QJ51R — antibacterial veterinary preparations for intracisternal use.
The active substances of the preparation are the antibiotic amoxicillin and prednisolone. Amoxicillin belongs to the β-lactam antibiotics of the aminopenicillin group. It blocks the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, inhibits the activity of transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase enzymes, and causes disruption of osmotic balance, leading to the death of microorganisms during the growth stage.
The preparation is active against gram-positive (Actinomyces spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Streptococcus spp., Listeria monocytogenes) and gram-negative (Actinobacillus spp., Bordetella bronchiseptica, Fusobacterium spp., Haemophilus spp., Moraxella spp., Pasteurella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella spp.) microorganisms. The following microorganisms are insensitive to the preparation: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia spp., indole-positive Proteus (except Proteus mirabilis), Enterobacter spp., Citrobacter spp., and Acinetobacter spp.
Prednisolone is a dehydrogenated analogue of hydrocortisone. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, desensitising, and antiallergic effects, as well as anti-shock and antitoxic properties. By stimulating steroid receptors, it induces the formation of a special class of proteins — lipocortins — which possess anti-oedematous activity; it also reduces the activity of hyaluronidase and contributes to a decrease in capillary permeability.
The maximum concentration of amoxicillin is observed in the urine (kidneys) and bile. The concentration in the tissues of the intestinal wall, liver, and kidneys is approximately 10–30% of the concentration in blood serum, and may be higher than in the skin, fat, spleen, and muscles. The greater part of amoxicillin is excreted in the urine in unchanged form.
Indications
Treatment of cows, sheep, and goats suffering from subclinical and clinical forms of mastitis of bacterial aetiology caused by microorganisms sensitive to amoxicillin.
Dosage and Administration
Administer intramammary at the following doses:
- cattle — the contents of one-half or one full syringe-tube (5–10 ml of the preparation), depending on the severity of the disease, administered once daily into each affected quarter of the udder, which has been thoroughly milked out and the teat end disinfected;
- sheep, goats — ¼ to ½ of the syringe-tube contents (or 2,5–5 ml of the preparation), depending on the severity of the disease, administered 1–2 times daily into each affected quarter of the udder, which has been thoroughly milked out and the teat end disinfected.
After administration of the preparation, the affected quarter of the udder is massaged to ensure uniform distribution of the preparation throughout the entire cistern.
Duration of treatment: 5–7 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins or to other preparations of the β-lactam group.
Do not use concomitantly with antibiotics of the cephalosporin, tetracycline, or macrolide groups.
Withdrawal Period
Slaughter of animals for meat and use of milk for human consumption are permitted 14 and 4 days, respectively, after the last administration of the preparation. Meat and milk obtained prior to the indicated period shall be disposed of or fed to non-productive animals, depending on the conclusion of a veterinary medicine physician.
