Description

A white to yellowish oily suspension with a characteristic odour of its components; separates on storage.

Composition

syringe-tube (10 ml) contains the following active substances:
- oxytetracycline hydrochloride - 200 mg;
- neomycin sulphate - 250 mg;
- bacitracin - 2,000 IU;
- prednisolone - 10 mg.
Excipients: base and stabilisers.

Pharmacological Properties

NEOKSOL is a combination product containing three antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory component. It provides synergistic enhancement of antimicrobial activity against virtually all known microorganisms responsible for mastitis.

Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group. Its mechanism of action consists in inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby preventing the association of ribosomes with aminoacyl-transfer RNA. It is also considered that oxytetracycline reversibly binds to 50S ribosomes and alters the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane of susceptible microorganisms.

Oxytetracycline has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms: Streptococcus spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Brucella spp., Haemophilus spp., E. coli, Pasteurella spp., Klebsiella spp., Erysipelothrix spp., Fusobacterium spp., Salmonella spp., as well as protozoa (Protozoa spp.), mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma spp.), rickettsiae (Rickettsia spp.), and chlamydiae (Chlamydia spp.).

Neomycin is an antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside group; it exerts bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Klebsiella spp., A. pyogenes, Streptococcus spp.).

Bacitracin is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts against Gram-positive and certain Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, A. pyogenes).

Prednisolone is a dehydrogenated analogue of hydrocortisone. It possesses anti-inflammatory, desensitising, and anti-allergic effects, as well as anti-shock and antitoxic properties. By stimulating steroid receptors, it induces the formation of a specific class of proteins — lipocortins — which possess anti-oedematous activity; it also reduces hyaluronidase activity and contributes to decreased capillary permeability. Prednisolone enables maximum reduction of the inflammatory response and tissue oedema of the udder, reduces the somatic cell count in milk, and promotes rapid restoration of milk production.

Indications

For the treatment of clinical and subclinical mastitis in lactating cows caused by microorganisms susceptible to oxytetracycline, neomycin, and bacitracin.
Prior to use, it is recommended to verify the susceptibility of the microorganisms to oxytetracycline, neomycin, and bacitracin, the active substances of the product.

Dosage and Administration

The contents of one syringe-tube are administered into the affected quarter of the udder, which must be milked out and disinfected beforehand. After administration, the udder quarter is massaged to ensure uniform distribution of the product throughout the cistern. The procedure is repeated three times at 12-hour intervals.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to neomycin, oxytetracycline, or bacitracin.
Do not use during the dry-off period.

Withdrawal Period

Milk from treated animals must not be used for human consumption until 8 milkings after completion of the treatment course. Until that time, milk must be fed to non-productive animals or disposed of.

Slaughter of animals for meat is prohibited during the treatment period. Meat may be used for human consumption 14 days after the last administration of the product.

Presentation

Polymeric syringe-tubes of 10 ml.
