Type of formulation: antibiotic

Description

Grey to grey-brownish oral powder, granulated with specific odor.

Formulation

1 g of the drug contains active ingredient:

enramycin – 40 mg.

Excipient: rice husk.

Pharmacological properties

ATC vet classification code QJ01 – anti-bacterial veterinary drug for systemic use. QJ01XX – other antimicrobial veterinary drugs.

Enramycin is a polypeptide antibiotic developed as a feed additive. It is produced by microorganisms Streptomyces fungicides. Enramycin has an effective antibacterial action against gram-positive bacteria and inhibits development of the general pathogens of intestinal flora, and namely: Clostridium perfringens, Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Diplococcus pneumoniae. It has a slight antibacterial action against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp. etc.

The action mechanism is connected with inhibition of formation of a bacterium cell wall. Its action is effective at the stage of schizogenesis, it has disinfection and lysis action. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for Staphylococcus aureus is 0.78 – 1.56 µg/ml, MIC for Streptococcus hemolyticus and Streptococcus faecium is 0.045 µg/ml and 3.12 µg/ml, respectively. MIC for Clostrium perfringens, Bacillus tetani, Botox, Clostridium welchii is lower than 0.78 µg/ml. Enramycin has a slight antibacterial action against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp. etc. and MIC in respect of them is more than 100 µg/ml.

Resistance of bacteria to enramycin develops slowly. No resistance to enramycin is registered in Clostridium perfringens. No cross-resistance between enramycin and other antibacterial drugs is observed in microorganisms.

In case of oral administration in therapeutic doses enramycin is not absorbed from alimentary canal and it is excreted via faeces. It inhibits development of microorganisms that produce ammonia, thus, it assists in decrease of ammonia level in alimentary canal. Enramycin is not revealed in tissues and fluids of an organism.

Use

Treatment of decorative birds (pigeons and parrots) in case of gastrointestinal diseases that are induced by microorganisms sensitive to enramycin.
