Pharmacological Properties

ATCvet classification code QJ01 - antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use.
MARFLOX is a combination drug containing moxifloxacin and colistin.

Moxifloxacin - a 4th-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal action, active against gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Enterobacter spp., Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Haemophilus spp., Moraxella spp., Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Serratia marcescens, Providencia spp., Citrobacter freundii, Neisseria spp., Morganella morganii, Campylobacter spp., Fusobacterium spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Legionella spp., Bacteroides spp.) and gram-positive (Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium spp.) microorganisms, as well as chlamydia (Chlamydia spp.) and mycoplasma (Mycoplasma spp.). It has activity against microorganisms resistant to other classes of antibacterial drugs, including β-lactams and macrolide antibiotics.
The mechanism of action of moxifloxacin involves the suppression of bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II), leading to the cessation of the process of spiralization and DNA synthesis.

Colistin - an antibiotic from the polymyxin group. It acts bactericidally on gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas spp.) by binding to phospholipids of the cytoplasmic membrane and increasing its permeability for intracellular and extracellular components, leading to the destruction of the bacterial cell wall.
Moxifloxacin is rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Feed has little effect on the rate and completeness of absorption. The bioavailability of moxifloxacin after oral administration is about 90%. It has a pronounced post-antibiotic effect. The half-life of moxifloxacin is 9-16 hours.
Colistin is absorbed in small quantities from the gastrointestinal tract, so it is effective in diseases of the digestive organs. Unlike the low concentrations of colistin in the blood serum and tissues, high and constant concentrations are always present in various parts of the digestive tract. A higher concentration is observed in the cecum and colon. It is mainly excreted from the body with feces.

Application

Treatment of decorative birds (pigeons, parrots, canaries) for infectious diseases of the respiratory and digestive organs caused by microorganisms sensitive to moxifloxacin and colistin.

Dosage

Orally with drinking water at a dose of 1.0 ml of the preparation per 4 liters of drinking water or 5 mg of moxifloxacin and 100,000 IU of colistin per 1 kg of body weight. The course of treatment is 3-5 days.
Before use, shake the ampoule or vial with the preparation.
During the treatment period, decorative birds should only receive water containing the drug.
Prepare a fresh solution of the drug daily in the volume calculated for consumption within 24 hours.

Contraindications

Do not use in the presence of resistant strains of disease-causing agents.
Increased sensitivity to moxifloxacin and colistin.
Do not use in the presence of resistant strains of disease-causing agents.
Do not use simultaneously with tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, chloramphenicol, as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Do not use simultaneously with preparations containing cations Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+.
Do not use in productive animals and poultry!
Do not use for prevention!

Warnings

Side effects
In case of overdose in birds, disorders of the nervous system may occur. In case of side effects (itching, muscle tremors), discontinue the use of the drug and use desensitizing therapy.
Special  warnings  during  use
Due to the possible development of resistance of microorganisms to moxifloxacin and colistin, the drug should not be used in infections of moderate severity. Treatment should be based on testing the sensitivity of the causative microorganisms to moxifloxacin and colistin.
Discontinue the use of the drug in case of detection of the resistance of the causative agent to moxifloxacin and colistin.
Use during pregnancy
Not established.

Interaction  with  other  drugs  and  other  forms  of  interaction

Do not use simultaneously with tetracyclines, macrolides, lincosamides, chloramphenicol, as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Do not use simultaneously with preparations containing cations Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+.
It is not recommended to mix the drug with other medicinal products.
