COMPOSITION
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
ATC vet classification code QJ01 – antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use.
Ceftiofur is a semi-synthetic antibiotic from the cephalosporin of third generation. It has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Pasteurella haemolytica (Mannheimia spp.), Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus somnus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus (Porphyromonas asaccharolytica), Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Streptococcus suis). Ceftiofur blocks the synthesis of bacteria cell walls by inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan.
After the injection ceftiofur quickly undergoes metabolism and produces desfuroylceftiofur, an active metabolite. Through binding to plasma proteins, the active metabolite of ceftiofur is concentrated at the site of inflammation.
The maximum blood plasma concentration occurs after 1-2 hours from the administration.
Ceftiofur is excreted primarily in the urine and partly with faeces.
APPLICATION
Cattle: Treatment of animals suffering from acute postpartum endometritis, necrobacteriosis and respiratory diseases, caused by microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Haemophillus somnus) which are sensitive to Ceftiofur.
Pigs: treatment of animals against respiratory diseases that caused by microorganisms (Pasteurella haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Streptococcus suis, Salmonella cholerasuis) that sensitive to Ceftiofur.
DOSAGE
Cattle: the treatment of respiratory diseases and acute necrobacteriosis – intramuscularly at a dose of 1 ml per 50 kg of body weight (1 mg of ceftiofur per 1 kg body weight) once a day for 3-5 days; for the treatment of acute postpartum metritis (10 days after calving) – subdermally, 1 ml per 50 kg of body weight (1 mg of ceftiofur per 1 kg body weight) once a day for 5 days.
Pigs: intramuscularly, 1 ml per 16 kg of body weight (3 mg of ceftiofur per 1 kg body weight) once a day for 3 days.
